How Agentic AI Could Bring the Human Touch Back to Global Health Care

2026-06-02 · MIT Tech Review AI · Original

Health care systems around the world are facing mounting pressure as demand rises and resources fail to keep pace. Years of underinvestment, staffing shortages, and hiring challenges have collided with the needs of aging populations that require more frequent and complex care. The result is increasingly fragmented access, longer waits, overburdened clinicians, and widespread burnout across the workforce. Agentic AI—AI systems designed to take initiative, coordinate tasks, and support decision-making—could help ease some of that strain. By handling administrative workflows, improving care navigation, and giving medical teams better real-time support, these tools may allow health professionals to spend more time with patients and less time on repetitive processes. While AI will not solve systemic health care challenges on its own, thoughtful adoption could make care more efficient, more accessible, and ultimately more human-centered.
