Humanoid robots are becoming a familiar sight in online videos, often appearing as sleek machines with white bodies and black heads and torsos. Some clips show them dancing, moving with surprising coordination, or demonstrating increasingly advanced capabilities. But despite the excitement surrounding these demonstrations, the latest breakthroughs in robotics are unlikely to transform everyday life anytime soon. The technology still faces major challenges involving reliability, cost, safety, autonomy, and the ability to operate effectively in unpredictable real-world environments. This story, produced through a collaboration between MIT Technology Review and Aventine, examines what today’s humanoid robots can—and cannot—do. Aventine is a nonprofit research foundation that creates and supports journalism and other content about how science and technology are reshaping the way we live. The viral videos may offer a glimpse of robotics’ future, but widespread practical use remains a distant prospect.
