A new open-source project is exploring how AI can generate LEGO models from text by writing LDraw source code. The creator began experimenting last December with ChatGPT and Claude, asking them to produce instructions in LDraw, a low-level “assembly” language for LEGO design. Rather than describing a model in broad strokes, LDraw specifies each LEGO piece and its exact position, rotation, and connection—one instruction at a time. When processed by compatible tools such as LDView, LeoCAD, or Studio, the code becomes a 3D LEGO CAD model that users can inspect, edit, and interact with. The project offers an intriguing bridge between generative AI, programming, and digital construction, while also showing the limitations and potential of using language models for precise spatial design. By making the work open source, the creator invites developers and LEGO fans to experiment with AI-generated builds and improve the workflow.
